The Vessel The boat form as a metaphor for the passage of the human vessel through time. The physical representation of this symbol is meant to represent the choices we make in our lives, the final decisions that are made and the routes that are chosen are often not so different from one another as might be assumed. mixed media, rescue foil on canvas 250 x 75 cm 2018

The series is called Noah’s Flotilla, referring to the biblical story of Earth’s rescue from total devastation,by one huge vessel. In our current moment it seems the world’s armada is unable to stop its self destruction. It use to terrify us,now we terrify ourselves. We see the present situation as unparalleled, and the media present everything as potentially novel.

The sea is a symbol of both confinement and freedom. It is also a place of tragedy.People will always work, play, swim and eat from it .

To move over it,stay above it ,or vanish in it, has echoes of eternity. It represents a freedom that is a way “out”, an escape, a transit route to dissolve from this world.

Beetle Trap road salt,colour,Beetle.

Salt is one of humankind's oldest raw materials. It is distributed unevenly throughout the world and yet it is an essential requirement for survivalof all animal life, although in small quantities. These factors have given salt a great value, and even at times a religious significance.Between 2010 and 2012 I was experimenting with road salt. This work was left in the studio for a few months, while I returned to Ireland.During that time the water evaporated completely, and a beetle was trapped on the work forever.

Diary Pages

Unintentionally these pages began as an exercise at the end of periods in the studio.,just before returning home.Usually made quickly, between 5-10mins ans suing material immediately to hand,so as to keep the exercise as spontaneous as possible. The pages could have been a source for larger work, but generally were left alone as themselves .A collection of 4 volumes of original mixed media works on paper 1999-2007.
